What is homeopathy? A gentle introduction

Where homeopathy comes from, the ideas behind it, and what an individualised approach really means in practice.

Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine that was developed in Germany at the end of the eighteenth century by a physician called Samuel Hahnemann. More than two hundred years later, it is used by many people around the world as part of the way they look after their wellbeing.

The principle of like with like

At the heart of homeopathy is the idea that "like may be treated with like". Hahnemann observed that a substance which produces certain symptoms in a healthy person might, in a very small and specially prepared dose, be used to support someone experiencing similar symptoms. Remedies are made from plant, mineral and other natural sources through a careful process of dilution and succussion, a vigorous shaking at each stage.

The whole person, not a label

What draws many people to homeopathy is that it looks at the whole person. Two people with the same diagnosis may experience it in entirely different ways: different triggers, different moods, different patterns of sleep and appetite. A homeopath is interested in all of that, and in how your physical, emotional and mental experiences connect.

This is why consultations are individualised. There is no single remedy for a condition. Instead, the remedy is chosen to match you as a whole.

What the evidence says

It is only honest to say that homeopathy is debated, and that the scientific evidence for it is contested. I would always encourage you to read widely and to make the choice that feels right for you. Many people simply find that the time, attention and individualised approach suit them.

Alongside your medical care

Homeopathy is not a replacement for conventional medicine. Please keep seeing your GP, continue any prescribed medication, and seek medical advice for anything new, severe or worrying. Homeopathy can be explored alongside that care.
